Bluetooth

Bluetooth Logo

Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows computers, phones and other devices to talk to each other over short distances with a limit of 100 meters. Bluetooth uses radio waves, and is designed to be a secure and inexpensive way of connecting and exchanging information between devices without wires. This is useful if you are wanting to send some media or a certain file which isnt that large to another device in close range.

RSS Feeds - Really Simple Syndication

RSS is a tool that you have on your website or blog that allows you to see what other blogs or sites are doing.. Many news- elated sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it. Basically the feeds are on your site are information and updates about others peoples websites, companies and general news on what they are up to.

ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line

ADSL broadband  is the most common type of broadband as it uses a standard phone line and is supplied though BT. As well as being a faster and more reliable internet service, ADSL broadband differs from dial up internet in that it splits your phone line in two. It simply means that by converting your analogue phone line to a digital line your phone line can now be used to simultaneously transmit data at high speed. As a result of switching to ADSL broadband, Data transfered is at a much higher rate than before, an analogue modem works at a maximum speed of 56Kbps, but ADSL broadband works at speeds of 512Kbps and above depending on where you are in england.

VOIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. It is also referred to as IP Telephony or Internet Telephony. It is another way of making phone calls, with the difference of making the calls cheaper or completely free. The phone part is not always present anymore, as you can communicate without a telephone set. VoIP has a lot of advantages over the traditional phone system. The main reason for which people are so massively turning to VoIP technology is the cost, VoIP is apparently cheap, but most people use it for free. If you have a computer with a microphone and speakers, and a good Internet connection, you can communicate using VoIP for free.

Video Conferencing

Video Conference.

This lesson we learned how to use video conferencing software, how people can use the internet to talk to a group of people. This software allows people to share information with a group, like giving a lecture over the internet, or to discuss work. This software is useful if an important member of the team is unable to attend a meeting, or to contact others in a different country. You can use microphones, webcams and there is a chat incase you dont have a webcam or microphone.

Deadline Extended

The normal deadline was for yesterday, monday 22nd but Julian has given us another week to complete the task, We needed this to finish our production files and we now will complete our work before the deadline.

Branding

Example of a Brand.

A Brand is a specific type of product, It may take form of a sign, name, symbol or combination of colours. A Brand allows you to recognise the product with ease, It gives the product a better view all round, maybe increasing business or tourism. A legally protected product is called a trademark such as Adidas, Nike or Coca-Cola.

Most brands are known through a picture or a jingle which you remember easily, it helps the customers understand the product they are buying is associated to that certain brand, making them want the product more.

Illustrator Work

Julian has given us the lesson to create a toolbar from scratch using all the tools in illustrate, this was work set by Ross last week and I have just completed it this morning.

With Nick out of our group we were down to three, I still think we did ok though, im looking forward to see what grade Julian gives us.

Vector & Bitmaps

Bitmap Image
Bitmap Images are made up of tiny dots called pixels which all up make up the image. Therefore if you make a Bitmap Image bigger you will just make the dots bigger aswell losing the quality of the image. Bitmaps are larger files, due to the fact they are made of dots.
Resolution:Screen - 72dpi - RGB
Print - 300dpi - CMYK

Con's:
Can't Make Bigger (Starts Off Large)
Cant Convert Very Well

Difference Between Bitmap and Vector

Vector
Vector images are made up of different individual objects, these are made up of mathematical equations, so you never lose any quality, rather than being madee of pixels, Vector graphics are made up of points, lines, and curves which, when combined, can be much more complex.

We have lost a member of our group, Nick has left the course for some reason that we dont know, We are down to 3 and were down to 2 when Alex was ill so me and zac had to start off the website on our own, we did a good job and have a skeliton website finished.

Blogs VS Forums

Blogs are about sharing your opinion and views on things and other people reading them and people can follow and comment and agree with you, or type back what they think about the post you have made, these posts will stay on your blog until you read them.
Forums are a discussion about views or opinions and often turn into an argument and have more faster feedback, posts are still kept in the forum post until you go back on the forum and read it.

Email VS Instant Messenger (IM)

Electronic Mail or E-Mail is a way of sending a letter electronically through a computer anywhere in the globe across the internet and the recipent will read it whenever they check there email inbox.
Instant Messenger or (IM) is a way of sending a message straight away between two computers fast with only half a second of a delay, this is a way of having a conversation with another person while they are online, unlike email when they have to look at there inbox to send a reply.

MMS - Multimedia Messaging Service

MMS is a standard way to send messages that include multimedia content to and from mobile phones. It extends the core SMS capability which only allowed exchange of text messages up to 160 characters in length. The most popular use is to send photographs from camera-equipped handsets, although it is also popular as a method of delivering news and entertainment content including videos, pictures, text pages and ringtones.

Group Work - Video Editing/Planning

Deadline today, we had to show our video edited or unedited to Julian, unfortunately Nick was absent again and missed the whole lesson, therefore we had nothing to show Julian.. Sucks to be us haha now our highest grade can only be a merit.. oh well atleast thats decent enough. Apart from that group work is going well, we  have our website planned out and just need to make it now, things are looking up.
After that we did a photoshop session with Julian we learnt how to make 3D Text and different tools and shortcuts in photoshop, it was very interesting and I enjoyed it a lot.

3G

3G or International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 or (IMT2000) better known as 3G or 3rd Generation. It is a connection that allows any mobile phone to access video, audio or any communications through a mobile broadband. The applications you can access on 3G are Mobile TV, Video on Demand, Video Conferencing, Tele-Medicine or Location-based services. The 3G network currently covers 93% of the UK population. The 3G services are designed to offer broadband cellular access at speeds of 2Mbps and be generally fast for all users that use it.

WAP - Wireless Application Protocol and GSM - Global System for Mobilers

WAP  is an open international standard for aplication-layer network communications in a wireless comunnication enviroment. Most use of WAP involves accessing the mobile web from a mobile phone, it was first released in 1999 with mixed reviews across the world with it being a huge success japan however failing to impress uk citizens until 2003/04 where it sparked some interest in the uk, WAP however has died out with phones providing HTML instead.

GSM is a second generation digital mobile cullular technology using a combination of frequency division multiple access and time division multiple access (TDMA). GSM operates in several frequency bands: 400Hz, 900Hz and 1800Hz. On the TDMA side, there are eight timeslots or channels carring calls, which operate on the same frequency. The standard was joinly deeveloped between European adminstistrations under Groupe Speciale Mobile in the 1980s and introduced commercially in 1991. Unlike other cellular systems, GSM provides a high degree of security by using subscriber identity module sim cards and GSM encryption.

I have just used the student discussion blog and it was the first time i've used one, went quite well posted a few replies although I didnt make a post myself, enjoyed it being able to chat to others and found it to be quite fun.

The W3C

The W3C was created in 1994 by Tim Berners-Lee.  He left the European Organization for Nuclear Research in October, 1994. It was founded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Laboratory for Computer Science with support from the European Commission and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which had pioneered the Internet.

Group Planning - Digital Communications

We are now in our groups, we have planned out what and when we are going to record. Each member of the group is going to do each task and we will have everyone having a go at everything, The idea is too get some camera shots of Weymouth College and interview the staff. After we have our video we will attempt to make a website that will have a layout of the Weymouth College campus and include a edited version of the video that we have shot, the websites aim is to promote the college.
